About a 2 1/2 hour drive north of Washington DC is Longwood Gardens. It is a wonderful place established by Pierre Dupont. It was originally purchased by Dupont in 1906 in order to preserve the woods that were about to be cut down by a local lumber mill. After purchasing the property he began to develop it into the gardens that remain today. Today the garden is over 1,000 acres in size.
This week was the first time I was able to visit the Italian Gardens at Longwood. The Italian Garden was created from 1925-27 based on the garden called Villa Gamberaia near Florence, Italy.
